Finding Calm in the Chaos

In this immensely crazy busy world, we deal with our daily tasks, getting wrapped up with our jobs and the product or service we buy or sell. We have a passion for all that we know, have a love for learning new things, adding those extra strings to our bow (I’m certain that it’s not just me). At the end of each day, we are grateful for the knowledge, but resting and taking a step back, is sometimes hard. The wind down at night can be difficult, switching off to forget about the job, to wake the next morning with that switch going back on like the overhead lights turned on at the end of the village disco, we cover our eyes saying ‘ no, not yet’. Then the day begins, and we trudge through it again, love it or loath it, we do it because we earn the funds to help us enjoy our time off from our daily routines.

But during the working hours, do you sit back and appreciate the surroundings? Do you take a deep breath and think ‘wow, life is great’. Do you take time to sit and do absolutely nothing? I find it hard.
I struggle to switch off, constant thoughts of my tasks to complete, goods to order, invoices to send, payroll to process, it’s all spinning constantly around my head, so for me when I get a moment of overwhelming chaos, I stop, I sit and then look at flowers, getting lost in their beauty. That wonderful saying ‘along the way take time to smell the flowers’ reminds me that it doesn’t have to be all work or all play, there can be those moments when it’s much simpler than that – ‘just appreciate what you have’.

At work we have produced hand carved flower troughs, filled them with bedding plants so we can all admire the flowers as they grow. I enjoy tending to the flowers, taking time to ‘dead head’ them properly, not just picking off the dying flower heads. Watering, nurturing an appreciating the colours is part of the daily routine reminding me and others that the flowers bring continuity and calmness to our surroundings. We can be as busy as we want, the flowers sit and wait patiently to be admired, they’ll be there through it all for whenever I’m ready to sit and do absolutely nothing.
